Fish Community Monitoring
Fish biology and ecology expertise
AFPS team have prodigious knowledge of freshwater fish communities and aquatic ecology, with lengthy career backgrounds in government fisheries departments. AFPS staff have been working on fishways and freshwater fish communities, from technical, operational, regulatory and policy standpoints for over 20 years and have a very advanced understanding of freshwater fish biology and aquatic ecology throughout Australia and other great tropical rivers of the world (e.g. the Mekong River Basin).
AFPS :
- are technical specialists in fisheries monitoring and reporting
- have a full range of sampling equipment: nets, traps, electrofishing boats and backpack electrofishers
- are highly qualified and experienced equipment operators
- possess permits to sample in Queensland, NSW and Victorian waters.
Fish Community Surveys
AFPS have extensive experience in developing, conducting and reporting on fish community surveys in Australia and SE Asia. Using state of the art electrofishing equipment and having U.S. Fisheries and Wildlife electrofisher accreditation, AFPS is capable of undertaking electrofishing operations in any freshwaters, regardless of launch and water conditions. AFPS is equipped with two electrofisher boats and Smith Root backpack electrofishers. This equipment allows us to operate in large open dams and rivers, as well as small waterways. In addition to this wide-ranging electrofishing capability, AFPS also has sampling apparatus including, multi-panel gill nets, bait traps, seine nets, drum nets and fyke nets.
AFPS can :
- Develop and conduct advanced fish and/or aquatic community surveys
- Produce technical and scientific reports
- Provide expert fish habitat management and restoration advice
Fish Barrier Monitoring
The unique fishway design abilities of AFPS have come from a significant body of work monitoring fish passage at barrier sites before and after fishway construction works in order to determine the success of the fish passage solution. Outcomes from this monitoring form the basis of asset operating manuals and demonstrates to regulators and the community, that the ecological outcomes of a project are being met. AFPS has unrivalled experience in conducting fish passage assessments, both in Australia and S.E. Asia.
