New Zealand Fish Passage Workshops 2023-2024

The National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020 and National Environmental Standards for Freshwater 2020 set out new requirements for managing fish passage in New Zealand. Regional councils are now responsible for implementing these requirements including the development of regional fish passage action plans.

AFPS is working with the National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) to increase competencies within regional council and Iwi groups by implementing several fish passage workshops that cover barrier assessment, prioritisation, identification of appropriate solutions, fishway design, permitting, construction, monitoring and maintenance. The project also involves the establishment of several demonstration fishway sites throughout New Zealand.
